ES: Open Source software widely used by the regional government of Extremadura

In a press release, the autonomous government of Extremadura communicated on the main conclusions of a study on the inventory and cataloguing of software that is currently being implemented and supported by Extremadura. From the study findings, it appears that open source software is widely used by the regional government.

All application software compiled in 2002 was developed in proprietary software. A decade later, however, the label that exclusively dominates the software production required by the autonomous government of Extremadura is open source.

Since 2004, when free software developed for Extremadura matched percentage-wise that of proprietary software, the trend has continued, the study noted. Free software figures had risen to nearly 93 % in 2009 and 100 % in 2011. As a result, almost 67 % of all software in use by regional public administration systems is developed in open source.

According to Jesús Alonso, the director general of the Department of Science and Technology, at Extremadura's Second Vice-Presidency and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Innovation, the figures show the regional government’s "commitment" to this pattern. He stated that the creation of this unique catalogue of software resources that is used by the regional government will allow "to improve its exploitation by the government and make it available to other authorities, businesses or citizens interested in its reuse to the degree that this could be possible."

Furthermore, the study revealed that a high percentage of the 468 registered application softwares in it have been incorporated in recent years.
