PL: Proof of progress on Open Source Geographic Information Systems

A group of European scientists will be showcasing the progress they have made in developing Open Source Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at a conference organised in Warsaw, Poland, in early June.

The conference is meant for, among others, public administrators interested in Open Source GIS applications and its use for security and environment monitoring.

Scientists from Belgium, Hungary, the Czech republic and Poland will demonstrate the most-promising and useful Open Source applications.  The four day conference and workshops will also be used to present preliminary results of their Cascadoss research project. This EU-funded research is intended to assess and improve Open Source GIS software.

The researchers are also determining how many public administrations in the EU are using Open Source GIS. "We are working on the results and I expect this information to be available online before the end of the year", says Dr. Rafal Wawer, a spatial application specialist at the Leuven University in Belgium.

One of the key note addresses will be given by Andrzej Jagusiewicz, Poland's Chief Inspector of Environmental Protection. In addition, Two GIS-specialists, Markus Neteler of Germany and Mateusz Loskot of Poland, will update conference attendants on developments in the Open Source GIS field.

The conference will last four days and is kicked of with a general symposium on Open Source GIS applications. Some twenty workshops and case studies are scheduled over the next three days, and will include examples of Open Source GIS applications and their uses for EU public administrations.

Attending the meeting at the Warswaw Conference and Congressional Centre is free. Registration is required.
