Lessons on Safer Internet

This is a resource for teachers who teach young children at schools. Its purpose is to introduce a possible framework and guidelines for lessons during which pupils are introduced to different subjects on safe behaviour online.

In Lithuania project "Safer Internet" is being implemented since 2005. The objective of this project is to draw society's attention to negative information and behaviour on the internet; to promote safer, especially children's, usage of the internet and new technologies; to enable society to anonymously report illegal and harmful internet content and help the children who have encountered bullying and other unpleasant experience online. Description of target users and groups

This set of lessons with visual materials is designed for teachers and children and is meant to be used during lessons by teachers to teach pupils about internet safety. This tool is orientated towards elementary school pupils and their teachers.

Description of the way to implement the initiative

This resource was created to provide information to teachers about communicating the message of safer behaviour on the internet to their pupils during their lessons. This tool provides a framework for specific lessons on safer internet and safer behaviour online. The team of the project "Safer Internet" introduces this website with a range of activities that can be used during lessons about internet safety to educate children and help them to avoid dangers that are lurking online.

There are 7 lessons in this resource for teachers of children to use during their lessons to talk about safety online with their pupils. These lessons are:

  • Privacy on the internet
  • Photos on the internet
  • Protect yourself from fraud on the internet
  • Social networks: what is your friend?
  • Stop sneer on social networks
  • Recognize improper content on the internet
  • Use your phone safely

Lessons consist of 3 main parts:

  1. Theoretical introduction which overviews the subject at hand and introduces to the principal knowledge that is essential for the later discussions on the subject.
  2. Activities during lessons which include: introductory questions, video clip, group work, guidelines for a discussion between pupils and the teacher.
  3. Additional material with links to different websites, videos and pdf files containing information relevant to the subject.
