Open Source Software (OSS) event - ‘Taking a closer look at open source software’
OSS is reaching new levels of maturity with respect to quality and reach, and is increasingly being adopted as a baseline for mainstream solutions and considered as an alternative to Proprietary Software. The topic of OSS has been high on the political agenda of the European Commission and some European Union (EU) Member States for quite a number of years.
Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) has recently published its Open Source Vision - Nurturing the proliferation of Open Source Software, a white paper aimed to provide a set of high level principles intended to facilitate the accelerated, non-intrusive adoption of OSS within Government. It also seeks to introduce enablers intended to nurture innovative views in the procurement process of ICT solutions within Government which are based on openness and reusability and which are in turn based on a number of key technology principles that have been adopted within MITA.
It is acknowledged that OSS awareness is essential amongst both public administration and the private sector to enable a nationwide OSS ecosystem. Raising awareness is critical to enable a wider understanding and subsequent acceptance.
MITA and IBM will hold a business breakfast targeted for policy makers from the public sector and private sector (including both ICT and ICT-using companies) on the current developments in the ambit of Open Source Software, its implications on licensing, and the future of Open Source Software in a world of Clouds.
Attendance is free of charge but booking is required as limited places are available.
