German schools turn to open source cloud eLearning

Schools and vocational colleges in Cologne, Aachen, Essen and other towns are using open source-based cloud eLearning and collaboration software. The cloud service, Ucloud4schools, is based on the NextCloud open source cloud services solution.

The Ucloud4schools service is used by over a hundred schools in the city and region of Cologne. In Aachen, the cloud software is already used by two schools, and the city administration is studying making the software available to others.

The software is also used by vocational training organisations, such as in Essen, and by schools in Gütersloh and Hückelhoven.

The cloud solutions is implemented, managed and supported by Regio IT, an IT service provider based in Aachen. According to Stefan Döhler, a consultant with Regio IT, the solution currently has more than 2000 users, including vocational college students, school students, teachers and parents.

Ucloud4schools switched from OwnCloud to NextCloud, a fork. The successful migration was announced last month by the eponymous IT service provider, based in Stuttgart.
