SEMIC 2018 logo The 8th edition of the SEMIC Conference on 'Linked Digital Public Administrations', held in Sofia, Bulgaria on 14th June, attracted around 200 participants from 38 countries, including Brazil, Japan and Uruguay. More than 700 people around the globe followed the event via live stream.

The SEMIC 2018 conference was organised by the ISA² Programme of the European Commission in close collaboration with Bulgaria's State eGovernment Agency under the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Policy makers, IT practitioners and researchers came together to present their innovative solutions, to share ideas and discuss recent trends on a variety of topics related to semantic interoperability for public administrations. Keynote speeches were given by the Deputy Chairperson of the Bulgarian State e-Government Agency (Alexander Yolovski), the EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society (Mariya Gabriel) and the Director-General of the Directorate-General for Informatics (Gertrud Ingestad). More than 20 speakers provided insights into the interconnection of base registries, common data models, core vocabularies, digital strategies and emerging technologies.

Conference participants had the opportunity to discover projects promoting semantic interoperability at national level and to take away best practices. Participants could also learn more about initiatives launched by the EU for facilitating data exchange between public administrations and enabling digital public services to citizens. In between the sessions, participants had time to explore a number of semantic interoperability solutions developed under the ISA2 programme and engage with other practitioners of the SEMIC community.

Next to the panel discussion on Digital Strategies, participants were invited to express their views on the challenges related to the implementation of digital strategies, the use of artificial intelligence and data analytics in the public sector and interoperability among public administrations.

You can find the main highlights, insights and critical messages in the SEMIC 2018 conference highlights report, which is now available.
