OD Goldbook recommends DCAT-AP

Open Data Goldbook (European Data Portal) recommends DCAT-AP for describing metadata

Published on: 05/03/2018

In February 2018, the European Data Portal published the third version of the Open Data Goldbook for Data Managers and Holders. The goldbook supports organisations on their path to ‘open by default’. It offers approaches and frameworks, supported by various best practices and examples from existing Open Data initiatives, answering questions such as:

  • How to build an Open Data strategy?
  • How to implement an Open Data initiative?
  • What is needed to put in place an Open Data lifecycle?
  • How to ensure and monitor Open Data success?

Providing qualitative metadata is crucial in order to improve the discoverability of data sets and to ensure interoperability with the European Data Portal. The process can be complex, and therefore the goldbook proposes a number of best practices for metadata and it recommends the use of DCAT-AP as metadata specification.

Furthermore, interoperability with the European Data Portal is crucial. This avoids costly crosswalks and mappings between datasets. Hence, the use of the DCAT-AP is strongly encouraged.
