Public administrations in Slovenia are to increase their use of free and open source software on their desktop computers. Around 2015, 80 percent of the government's offices should be using this type of desktop software, according to a plan published by the Ministry of Public Administration in January.

The open source software stack to be implemented includes open source office suites, open source web browser and open source operating systems. The ministry is setting-up a task force for the migration project, including representatives from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology.

The migration is to commence this year and speed-up in 2011, the ministry writes in the 'Study on the introduction of the Open Source Software on workstations in Slovenian public administration'.

According to the open source IT policy, there are already many examples of public administrations using free and open source software. "However, despite some attempts, open source has not yet found a way to desktop computers in the Slovenian public administration. A bright exception in this area is the judicial system, because in most desktops in court use OpenOffice, Firefox and Thunderbird already since 2006 and 2007." Other examples include the city of Ljubljana's public health organistion and its public transport organisation.

Commenting on the announcement in a statement, the Open Source Centre Slovenia (COKS), which helped write the plans, says it is the first serious approach to a gradual migration of public administrations to open source.

The policy is drawing a lot of attention from Slovenian IT professionals. Two articles on the policy by the IT news site Slo Tech are getting hundreds of comments.
