US: National Governors Association re-launches its website using an open source CMS

The US National Governors Association (NGA) has re-launched its website, replacing its proprietary content management system (CMS) with the open source solution Jahia 6.5, it was announced on 4 October 2011.

The NGA is the organisation representing the US state governors from both political parties. It promotes leadership, shares best practices, and speaks with a collective voice on national policy. Its new website facilitates easy access to over 7 000 research papers, publications, newsletters and webcast materials, ensuring that policy makers have access to the information that helps them to govern. It also employs reusable components to streamline development efforts and provide a common look and feel across the site.

Jahia 6.5 is the first open source next-generation CMS. It bridges web, portal, social, search and mobile user experiences with a single composite platform. This combines the modular ease of the general-purpose server-side scripting language PHP with the latest frameworks in the Java programming language. This makes it easy to build user-centric, content-rich applications combining any type of enterprise and web content.

Robert Thomas, Director of Information Technology at the NGA, said: "We needed to migrate from our previous CMS to one that would efficiently convey our message, and after examining several alternatives, we picked Jahia 6.5. We chose [it] because it was the easiest CMS for us to develop with while still offering the functionality and flexibility we needed. The user interface and intuitive graphical layout of the program also made it a natural fit for our non-technical end users, and minimised our training period."
