The EU-FOSSA 2 initiative will host three hackathons during 2019. With over 50 confirmed participants, the first hackathon focuses on PHP Symfony. It will take place in Brussels on 6 and 7 April.

During the hackathon, some of the most active developers from the PHP Symfony community will get together, many for the first time. The purpose of the hackathon is to bring together developers from outside and within the European Commission. Their time together will be spent working on important issues for the community and the EU institutions such as new features and security.

The EU-FOSSA 2 project is organising in parallel a bug bounty for the PHP Symfony software. Hackers can get rewards of up to EUR 15.000 for critical bugs they find. There is even a 20% bonus added to the prize if the hackers provide a fix for the bug they report. You can find more information on all the Bug Bounty programs here.

Two more Hackathons will take place on 4-5 May and on 5-6 October 2019. The EU-FOSSA 2 project has selected the community of Apache Tomcat as the topic of its Hackathon in May.

The October event is still in search of its software community. The European Commission will be happy to receive your suggestions at DIGIT-OSS-STRATEGY@ec.europa.eu. The selection criteria will be the same as the one used for the Bug Bounty programs. It will take into account the criticality of the software for the European institutions, the impact the initiative would have in the community, and the overall benefit created for users of the software.
