The second edition of the open source awards organised by the Free State of Thuringia in Germany has just been announced. Digital solutions can be nominated up to the end of October. Open source is one of the key topics in the state’s digital society strategy, which aims to encourage local entrepreneurship, education and research.

In this year’s “Digital und open source Preis” (digital and open source award), open source is one of three categories. In each of these, the winner will be awarded EUR 5,000 based on their project’s innovation, practical relevance, and suitability for sharing and scalability, the state’s Digital Agency announced.

The call for nominations is open to companies and projects in Thuringia. The open source category may also include projects focusing on open content, open access, and open source hardware. It is even possible to submit ideas for development, as long as the concrete project output is achieved before the end of 2021.

Visibility

“The competition aims to increase the visibility of open source solutions in Thuringia and stimulate public discussion on the topic,” the government adds in the announcement.

The winner will be selected by a five-person jury headed by Valentina Kerst, the state secretary for the ministry of the economy, science and digital society. The jury will announced the winners on 24 November 2020, at the InnoCon conference on innovation.
