Open source at Hungary’s public service university

Open source distributions

Open source is commonly used on the servers at Hungary’s National University of Public Service (Nemzeti Közszolgálati Egyetem, or NKE). The university is looking for IT support services for the Debian and Ubuntu open source software it uses, and for its Suse and Red Hat Linux distributions.

The university, created in 2012, prepares students for careers in public administration, the military, and law enforcement.

NKE is hoping to sign a three-year contract with a single IT service provider to support these and other, proprietary, server operating systems. IT service providers bidding for the contract should ensure minimal server interruptions, the university says, by combining continous monitoring with rapid troubleshooting. The deadline for submitting offers is 7 September.

The NKE is more than simply a user of Linux: its catalogue lists several online courses that, for example, prepare students to use the Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop, and make them familiar with common uses of Linux servers.
