TEDDI

The TEDDI project, which stands for "Technical Renewal of the Database Infrastructure”, focuses on a fundamental transformation of the database system used in the majority of OeNB's internal business applications. Specifically, the project aims to replace the current Oracle system with PostgreSQL.

PostgreSQL originated from the database development efforts at the University of California, Berkeley, and has been available as an open-source database system since 1994. Open source, in this context, means that the software can be used essentially free of charge. In contrast, Oracle is a commercial product that entails significant licensing costs. An internal analysis demonstrated that migrating to PostgreSQL presents a substantial economic advantage while maintaining a consistent level of quality. TEDDI's economic evaluation reveals the potential for cost savings amounting to several million euros by the year 2030.

Throughout the course of the project, approximately 400 databases containing around 180 terabytes of data were successfully migrated. The project spanned approximately two and a half years in duration. To ensure the professional achievement of the project's goals, external support was enlisted from a local Enterprise Support Partner, which provided its own migration tools and expertise.
