This page describes version 2.0.0 of GeoDCAT-AP, which is the latest release of the GeoDCAT Application Profile for geospatial data portals in Europe (GeoDCAT-AP).
The GeoDCAT-AP specification does not replace the INSPIRE Metadata Regulation nor the INSPIRE Metadata technical guidelines based on ISO 19115 and ISO19119. Its purpose is give owners of geospatial metadata the possibility to achieve more by providing an additional RDF syntax binding.
Some changes to the specification we would like to highlight are:
- Document completely re-written starting from the DCAT-AP 2.0.1 specification, with the purpose of using a consistent document structure across DCAT-AP specifications.
- Use of classes and properties aligned with DCAT-AP 2.0.1 (see issues #1, #2, #5, #7, #8, #10, #16). Classes and properties no longer used or replaced by new ones have been deprecated, see Deprecated classes and properties.
- Alignment with INSPIRE in terms of Agent Roles and Controlled vocabularies for spatial resolution and maintenance frequency.
- The supporting XSLT tool that can transform ISO/INSPIRE metadata into GeoDCAT-AP metdata is updated to be compliant with GeoDCAT-AP v2.0.0.

About GeoDCAT-AP
GeoDCAT-AP is an extension of DCAT-AP for describing geospatial datasets, dataset series and services. It provides an RDF syntax binding for the union of metadata elements defined in the core profile of ISO 19115:2003 and those defined in the framework of the INSPIRE Directive. Its basic use case is to make spatial datasets, data series and services searchable on general data portals, thereby making geospatial information better searchable across borders and sectors. This can be achieved by the exchange of descriptions of data sets among data portals.
GeoDCAT-AP is a joint initiative of:
- the Joint Research Centre (JRC);
- the Publications Office of the European Union (PO);
- the Directorates-General for Digital Services (DIGIT) in the context of the Interoperable Europe Programme
- the Directorates-General for Environment (DG ENV), and;
- the Directorates-General Communications Networks, Content & Technology (CONNECT) of the European Commission.
