The mobile eID solution offered by Portugal’s Agency for Administrative Modernisation has received the 2015 ACEPI award for the best digital public administration solution. The award has been handed out since 2000, with other categories including digital innovators in online commerce, for the best websites and start-up companies.

The award ceremony took place on 24 September in Lisbon.

The ACEPI jury commended AMA for its Chave Móvel Digital (CMD - Digital Mobile Key), which offers citizens a simple-to-use method for electronic authentication. CMD uses a security code received by SMS or by email, which is combined with a mobile phone number or email address and a PIN code. The system is meant to be safer than user/password combinations. The system requires users to have previously identified themselves at a government agency, with a valid ID.

According to AMA, its CMD provides an “alternative way to authenticate and access services in portals and websites of public and private entities, using mobile phones or email.”

For instance, CMD can be used to access Portugal’s Mapo Do Cidadão (Citizens Map), which gives online information on government services, including contact information and opening hours, and the possibility to schedule appointments.
