The Romanian government is using free and open source solutions for some of its main web sites, including the Official website of the Government of Romania and the General Secretariat of the Government. These two sites are both implemented using web server Apache, relational database management system MySQL and the PHP programming language. Both sites are run on Linux hosts, using the Debian and Ubuntu distributions.

Romania is using a similar set-up for its newly launched open data portal. Here the government implements Linux, web server Nginx and, CKAN a management solution for open data sets."

"We embraced this solution in order to align ourselves at today's EU best practices with little effort and costs. It allows us to invest more resources towards open data promotion among civil servants and to consolidate our message as a European project with very similar implementations within most of the member states", says Andrei Nicoară, Advisor to the Prime Minister.

All of these web sites are managed by the government's 'Online & Design Services Department' (DSOD). The department is also responsible for other web sites, such as the Open Government Partnership and the platform for public administration recruitment. Both sites are using the open source content management system Wordpress, but are are hosted independent from the DSOD."
