The 600-bed Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton (UK) has switched to using OpenMaxims, a patient record solution made available under the AGPL, an open source licence. This marks the first deployment of OpenMaxims, announces IMS Maxims, the UK-based firm that is developing the software.
The software solution should help to make processes for admission, transfer and discharge of patients more efficient.
The OpenMaxims patient administration system was originally designed for the UK’s national health service (NHS) by IMS Maxims. The firm decided to re-licence the software in June last year. In December, three NHS trusts became the first three members of a community interest company (CIC), becoming custodians for OpenMaxims.
An announcement on 7 October by IMS Maxims quotes Richard Jefferson, head of programme commissioning at NHS England, as saying: “This represents a landmark moment in the use of open software in the NHS and validates the idea that open source can play a significant role alongside proprietary offerings.”
OpenMaxims is one of the projects promoted by Code4Health, an NHS programme to promote the sharing and reuse of ICT solutions in health care organisations, aggregating open source projects ‘providing software suitable for use in UK health and care’.
