ABCD is a comprehensive standard for exchanging primary biodiversity data stemming from natural history collections or observational databases. It covers general aspects of occurrence data and the characteristics of biological collections (botanical, zoological, bacterial, fungal; preserved, living, culture collections; herbaria, botanical & zoological gardens etc.).

EFG extends this standard to include the elements required for publishing data items typical for paleontological specimen collections and mineralogical collections. It is used in the GeoCASe network.
