The Greek city Heraklion on the island Crete, wants Open Source software and open standards for its new eGovernment portal.

The island capital just published a call for tender, preferring Open Source software as well as open standards. The municipality aims to increase delivery of services over the Internet to its citizens and the private sector.

With about 150.000 residents Heraklion is the largest urban centre in Crete and the economic centre of the island. The city has decided to provide e-Government services to its citizens and just announced an call for tender for a "Portal offering public information and digital eGovernment services". The city hopes the portal will also improve the quality of service.

The contractor to be selected should design and develop a portal using among others Open Source software and open standards. The technical specifications of the portal also require compliance with European eGovernment guidelines.

The city is following the example of Greek cities Athens and Toperos Xanthis, both using mainly Open Source software for running the administrations' websites.

Athens is serving its website with the GNU/Linux Open Source operating system, the Open Source Apache web server and Open Source programming language PHP. Toperos Xanthis is also using GNU/Linux to run its web servers. The website is built with Joomla, an Open Source content management system.
