I was wondering when is the right time to publish a blog on an event that happened – immediately after the event when all is fresh in one’s mind or give it a bit more time and use the blog as a reminder and perhaps announce a new event.

Anyway, now that I briefly report on the 5th LEOS community webinar the passage of time decided for the latter. The 5th LEOS community webinar was held on 22.2.22 a palindrome date. And, what happened since!

The webinar demonstrated the potential of advanced IT in drafting law. The presentation given by Prof. Palmirani drew on the findings of a study on ‘Drafting legislation in the era of AI and digitisation’. As a reminder, the studied focused on what is doable soon, provided concrete results that inspire and gave a glimpse of how smart IT can/will assist better law making.  In particular, she explained the results obtained in  4 use cases on (i) learning from corrigenda, (ii) verifying the transposition of EU law by a Member State at the click of a mouse, (iii) which derogations and transitory provisions apply, and (iv) assessing digital readiness.

And, not as an aside, piloting of LEOS (or EdiT as LEOS is referred to in the Commission) shows very good results. Seven EdiT pilots/150 colleagues involved in drafting and adoption of ‘real’ acts proved that EdiT is ‘fit for purpose’, intuitive to use and results in significant efficiencies. It also showed that it required implementation of a cultural change that would drive the users involved to adopt different ways of drafting and adopting legislation

The slide deck that was presented at the webinar is available here.

Already save the 21 June at 9.30 when the next – 6th LEOS community webinar – will be held. Until then, we are working very hard to migrate LEOS to a code repository platform – another milestone. Looking forward to sharing with you more updates on this at the webinar.
