The Interoperability Unit of DG DIGIT and the Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) join forces in holding a multidisciplinary Science for Policy Conference on “Artificial Intelligence: What's in it for the Public Sector?”.
Academia, civil society, governments and the private sector are invited to come together and explore the way in which AI can advance the digital transformation of EU public administrations.
What are the largest opportunities and challenges that AI has to offer to the public sector? Under the umbrella of the Digital Decade policy programme, participants will have the chance to give their view during a series of hybrid and virtual workshops and a one-day on-site session.

Starting with four sessions in the beginning of June, four different topics will be tackled:
- The Regulatory perspective (the 7th of June)
- The Trustworthiness of AI applications in the public sector (the 8th of June)
- AI in practice and implementation strategies (the 8th of June)
- Bringing AI closer to citizens and smart communities (the 9th of June)
On the 22nd of June, a physical Policy Round Table will take place in Brussels at which Commissioner Mariya Gabriel (Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth) and Commissioner Johannes Hahn (Budget and Administration) will both be present.
Paving the way forward with science and best practices
Artificial intelligence in the public sector is currently often associated with efforts to regulate or facilitate AI in daily life. Its large potential for the public sector itself is considered less often, while it can substantially improve the quality of public services. Amongst others by automating repetitive tasks, increasing the interoperability of public services, supporting large data analyses, digitalising public services, and increasing government innovation via GovТech.
At the same time, applying AI in the public sector is frequently not without serious obstacles, such as keeping personal data secure or upskilling the public sector staff.
The conference will give policy makers, public sector officials, scientists, and representatives from civil society the opportunity to jointly help identifying the most relevant needs and goals of our time, with a strong focus on the scientific and technological angle, as well as with best practices from experiences across Member States and local administrations.
