TheNational Interoperability Framework Observatory (NIFO) has published the latest series of its popular factsheets on Digital Public administrations. Thirty one European countries from within and outside the EU have reported on their status of digitally transforming their public administrations.

The factsheets provide an overview of the main developments and advances in terms of digitalization and interoperability in a specific respective country. They are of special interest to members in public administrations in the EU and academics who work on digital transformation, digitalization and interoperability topics.

Next to the 27 EU-member states, the countries of the European Free Trade Association (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland), together with Ukraine, are included in the 2023 release.

As in the years before, each country has an accompanying infographic that summarises the detailed factsheet. A new feature since this year is an annex that gives a concise update of a country’s status in the key topics of:

  • Interoperability and interoperable public services,

  • Innovative use of technologies by the public sector, and

  • Data sharing (e.g., open data, data spaces, Once-Only principle).

Traditionally, a dedicated factsheet for the EU in general is also available. In it, readers can get an overview of all initiatives related to digital public administrations and interoperability that are undertaken at the European Union level.

The factsheets will be complemented by the 2023 edition of the State-of-play report on Digital Public Administration and interoperability. This report is expected to be released by NIFO on Joinup in September 2023 and provides a more high-level overview of the main developments and trends of 31 countries falling under the scope of NIFO.

Other interesting related pieces of information include the analysis of the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) (that tracks the progress of EU countries in digitalisation efforts) and of the eGovernment Benchmark report on how 35 European countries deliver digital public services.
