The Croatian government is one of the organisers of the Open Systems Day, a three day conference taking place in Zagreb this week. It hopes to increase awareness for Open Source applications in both the public and private sector.

The conference is organised by the government office for e-Croatia, the Croatian Linux Users' Group and the Croatian Society for Open Systems. The Office for e-Croatia is working on an information society policy.

The conference's opening address is by Diana Šimić, deputy State Secretary at the office for e-Croatia, discussing the European context of Open Source.

The Croatian government wants to increase its use of web services.  The country in 2005 decided that all government services provided over the Internet must be made available in either the ISO standard Open Document Format or as ISO standard HTML. Forms and other documents need to be equally accessible from either Windows, Mac OS X or GNU/Linux.

The Open Systems day and Linux users conference is organised for the fifteenth time this year. The Zagbreb conference is taking place on 16, 17 and 18 April. Several well-known Open Source developers and representatives of interest groups will be present, such as GNU/Linux kernel developers Alan Cox and Harald Welte. Speakers include also  Machtelt Garrels, author of workshops on the Open Document Format and Andrew Shitov, a Perl specialist.
