The government of Aragon (Spain) has published updates of the open source software it uses for 25 eGovernment services. The updates have been available at the repository of Spain’s Centre for Technology Transfer since late last month.

The update is a contribution towards the sharing and reuse of ICT solutions, the government of the autonomous region said in a prepared statement.

“The release of the code and documentation related to the eGovernment platform of the government of Aragon facilitates coordination with other governments and stakeholders involved in the development of eGovernment”, the statement said. Making documentation and code available also helps bring about openness in public services.

Part of the updated ICT tools are for providing online government services. The government also updated components of its administrative management tools.

Management solution

The updates boost competition, Aragon explained. The availability of the information and code makes it easier for companies to bid for government contracts involving software development, and facilitates integration of software applications. In turn, this reduces the government’s dependency on software companies and ICT service providers.

At the same time Aragon also published a request for tender. The autonomous region is looking for commercial support for subsequent updates, hoping to combine software management solutions and semantic tools to ‘unify the information’. This new to be built software solution will be made available as open source too, published using the Europen Union’s open source licence EUPL.
