Discussion covers open standards, open data and open government

Italy’s parliament on Monday will hold a public debate on possible regulations on free and open source software, open standards, open data and open government. The meeting on Monday 18 April is hosted by Mirella Liuzzi, of the Five Star Movement.

The Italian MP says her party is committed to making Italy’s public administrations more open and citizen-friendly. “The approach of open culture is essential in politics and all fields of knowledge”, she said in an email to the Open Source Observatory (OSOR). “We have pushed the government to reform, and have helped introduce legislative tools to allow the use of open source solutions in administration.”

The debate in the Camera dei Deputati, one of the two houses of the Italian parliament, is organised by the Stati Generali dell'Innovazione, an NGO advocating open government. SGI speakers include Giuseppe Iacono, the NGOs vice president, SGI board member Renzo Provedel, and Flavia Marzano, the organisation’s president.

“With the valuable support of NGOs like SGI, government led by the Five Stars Movement will be able to revolutionise the Italian system, to the benefit of citizens”, Ms Liuzzi added.

“We aim to provide the Italian parliament with tools to help them decide if and how to define regulations on openness”, SGI President Marzano explained by email. The NGO will present the role of free and open source in public administration, and will also emphasise the importance of open standards and open data. “We want to update the members of parliament on open source, open data and open innovation.”
