On Thursday 2 February, the Latvian Open Technology Association (LATA) will announce its ‘Most Open Institution’ award.
One of the potential winners is the Latvian National Archive, which was nominated because of its use of open technologies for its online audiovisual archive. Another nominee is the municipality of Ventspils, for its use of open source software on workstations and server hosts, across the administration and in the town’s schools.
The award ceremony is part of LATA’s Open Technology for Growth conference at the Latvian University of Natural Sciences in Riga.
The conference promotes the use of open technologies to facilitate economic growth and improve government services. Over 200 attendees have registered so far, according to LATA, including representatives from public administrations.
One of the presenters is Toms Ceļmillers, an expert at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development. He will talk about Latvia’s plans on open data and update attendees on the plans for Latvia’s open data portal. Other speakers will address the use of open source in education.
