SEMIC.EU's partner, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization used the opportunity of a Linked Open Data meeting organized by ]init[ in Brussels on 12 April to launch officially the AGROVOC Linked Open Data (v1) and the Vocabulary editor VocBench (v1.1).

AGROVOC

With the publication of AGROVOC LOD 1.0 the community has more than 30,000 concept URIs for usage available. AGROVOC covers agriculture, forestry, fishery, nutrition and related areas. AGROVOC concept URIs already link together hundreds of different datasets. They give the possibility to link most of the datasets available in this area worldwide.

The power of the AGROVOC LOD is not only their expression in 20 languages. AGROVOC LOD also bridges quickly between different vocabularies. After ten days of release it contains more than 18,000 inlinks (EUROVOC, GEMET, LCSH, NAL, STW, RAMEAU) and outlinks (GEMET, RAMEAU).

VocBench

VocBench is a web-based, multilingual, vocabulary editing and management tool. Designed to handle different types of standard vocabularies it permits a globally distributed group of editors and terminologists to manage AGROVOC. Not only an editor, VocBench manages publication workflows and editorial processes such as publishing statuses, validation and versioning.

In addition VocBench features a flexible set of over three dozen web services that permit other applications to query VocBench vocabularies and seamlessly add rich indexing capabilities to their own interfaces.

With the publication of AGROVOC LOD and the release of the Workbench, FAO and its partners have set an important milestone to create an interoperability infrastructure for agricultural information.
