The Belgium government wants to reuse ‘Belgian Mobile ID’ a smartphone app for electronic identification, developed by banks and telecom providers in the country. The eID app could be used for eGovernment services, and the federal IT service agency, Fedict, is working on the app’s integration.

On 18 July, a legislative initiative to enable the Belgian Mobile ID app for eGovernment services was announced by Alexander De Croo, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Digital Agenda. The proposal, to be submitted this autumn, will detail the requirements for reuse, including safety and privacy.

In a statement, Deputy Prime Minister De Croo compares the mobile eID app to fitting the national ID card in a smartphone.

A convenient, easy to use eID app will boost the use of eGovernment services such as MyPension or Tax-on-Web, the minister writes on his website. “This will be an important step to make eGovernment services more user-friendly.”

The Belgian Mobile ID solution is developed by SixDots - Belgian Mobile Wallet, a consortium of four banks and three telecom operators. The eID app will be available on smart phones this year, the Belga press agency reported on 18 July.
