Denmark’s introduction of a new eID system, MitID, has been postponed to 2019 - 2020, the country’s IT press reports. Instead, the government is negotiating an extension of the contract for the current system, NemID, which ends in November.
The creation of a public-private partnership for Denmark’s next generation eID took longer than anticipated, reports Version2, a Danish IT news site. The country’s Agency for Digitisation (Digitaliseringsstyrelsen - DIGST) in 2016 signed an agreement with Finansrådet, a bankers association, which recently merged with two mortgage groups to form FinansDenmark.
The partnership should help make MitID usable for both government and private transactions.
The technical requirements for MitID are still under development. DIGST announced in December that it had completed discussions with national and international eID service providers, to help prepare the procurement process.
DIGST is now also discussing how to extend the current eID system, NemID. In March, DIGST reported that NemID, launched in 2010, had so far managed over 4 billion transactions.
