Prof. Dr. Joep Crompvoets holds a chair on Information Management in the Public Sector. He is also secretary-general of the EuroSDR network, which is a not-for-profit European organisation linking national mapping and cadastral agencies with research institutes and universities for the purpose of applied research in spatial data provision, management and delivery. He obtained his MSc degrees in Soil Science as well as Geo-Information Science for Rural Applications at Wageningen University, The Netherlands. His PhD-thesis was about the topic ‘National Spatial Data Clearinghouses (portals), Worldwide Development and Impact’. He has held a faculty position at Wageningen University and was employed by CSIC IRNAS research institute in Spain.

His domain of expertise refers to spatial data infrastructures, GIS, big (geospatial) data, open data, e-governance and public sector innovation. He fulfilled numerous international projects in these fields of expertise. His research has been supported by UN-GGIM of United Nations Statistics Division, the World Bank, European Commission, BELSPO federal Public Planning Service Science Policy (Belgium), Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), Flemish government, IWT Agency for Innovation by Science and Technology, and several national governments around the world.

He wrote numerous publications in the domains of spatial data infrastructures, information management systems, e-governance and public sector innovations. Since 2008, he is jury member of Belgian E-government awards.
