General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and location data

GDPR and location data

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force on 25th May 2018. GDPR is the first piece of EU data protection regulation to mention location data explicitly. Location data publishers, re-users and individuals (data subjects) sharing their location data with public and private sector organisations are all impacted by GDPR.

ELISE has prepared location privacy location privacy guidance and is currently reviewing preparations for the new regulation with 'location data' stakeholders across Europe. We are carrying out a series of interviews and running various events to raise awareness and discuss issues on the topic. The events include webinars with project stakeholders (already completed), a Nordic region workshop (7th June), a public webinar (July/August) and a workshop planned for the INSPIRE Conference (18-21 September) [1]. Guidance will be updated and new documentation prepared to meet the needs of stakeholders dealing with this important new regulation.
