City of Malaga shares open da…
The city of Malaga (Spain) has announced that it is making available several extensions that it developed for the town’s open data portal, which is based on CKAN. The extensions include one to create a corporate look and feel, a contact-module, and another that makes it easy for the CKAN portal to be federated to Spain’s central open data portal.
The federation extension also lets the city federate its data repository with the data lab at Fiware, the EU-funded future Internet middleware platform.
Malaga’s modules are reused by other cities in Spain to federate their own data, the city’s…

Belgian researchers initiate…
Two researchers at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium) are launching the Open Patent Office, aiming to aggregate innovative ideas to defend them from being blocked by patents. Patents no longer contribute to innovation or knowledge, the two claim, and often create a loss instead of a profit. Conversely, there is a growing need for defensive publications to allow open innovation.
The non-profit Open Patent Office was unveiled at the Fosdem open source developer conference in Brussels earlier this month by Prof. Dr. Frederik Questier. He founded the NGO together with researcher and…

Openstack and CEPH implementation is an example to peers in government and industry
The Dutch government’s data centre in Groningen (ODC-Noord) is setting a standard for government-hosted cloud services. Its combination of OpenStack (managing virtualised machines) and CEPH (handling storage) is attracting more and more central government services. The open source solutions are proving enormously scalable, while keeping costs low.The data centre began an Openstack and CEPH pilot in early 2014 - finding it the best option among alternatives such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and…

Dutch political party deploys…
Last week, the Dutch society-driven political movement GeenPeil started its own political party, promising its members direct democracy through what it calls remotely controlled Members of Parliament. Every week, the party's members will be asked for their opinions in "mini-referenda" on the votes that take place in the Dutch Parliament. Their (anonymous) votes will determine the voting behaviour of the party's Members of Parliament, thereby emulating direct democracy in a representative parliamentary system.
GeenPeil is a spin-off of the Dutch provocative blog GeenStijl, nowadays part of the…
